Adaptation Initiatives and Projects
ACCCA: Advancing Capacity to Support Climate Change Adaptation: This project aims to enable and support effective adaptation decisions related to the United Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and other Multi-lateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) that would reduce vulnerability to climate change and environmental change, while also promoting attainment of the MDGs. The pilot actions will address the vulnerabilities of livelihood groups, food and water security, human settlements, human health etc., to climate change and climate variability, as well as the associated negative social, economic and environmental conditions, as described in the recent Fourth Assessment IPCC report.
The specific objectives of this initiative are to:
- Increase the resilience and well-being of groups in developing countries of Africa that are particularly vulnerable to climate change and other environmental stresses;
- Integrate climate change adaptation strategies into development planning and poverty reduction policies; and
- Enhance the participation of all actors in civil society, including disadvantaged groups that are particularly vulnerable, in forming policies related to development, the implementation of MEAs, and poverty reduction.
Adaptation Policy
UNFCCC Nairobi Work Programme is a 5 year programme (2005-2010). Its objective is to assist all Parties, in particular developing countries, including the least developed countries and small island developing states, to: improve their understanding and assessment of impacts, vulnerability and adaptation to climate change; and make informed decisions on practical adaptation actions and measures to respond to climate change on a sound scientific, technical and socio-economic basis, taking into account current and future climate change and variability.
Adaptation Training and Capacity Building
CLACC - Capacity Strengthening of Least Developed Countries for Adaptation to Climate Change – is a group of fellows and international experts working on adaptation to climate change for least developed countries. Our aim is to strengthen the capacity of organisations in poor countries and support their initiatives in sustainable development through the network of fellows. We operate in 15 countries in the South, 12 in Africa and 3 in South Asia.
UNDP’s Adaptation Learning Mechanism: Adaptation to climate change is not a new concept, but planning for adaptation is. This project is about helping people adapt to climate change, with a focus on learning from experience. The ALM’s knowledge sharing platform contributes to the implementation of the Nairobi Work Programme, which aims to increase the ability of countries to adapt to climate change, with an emphasis on exchanging experiences. ALM is funded by the Global Environment Facility and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme, in partnership with The World Bank and the United Nations Environment Programme.
Adaptation Research
Climate Change Adaptation in Africa (CCAA) is a research programme run by IDRC. The research and capacity development programme supports African countries in their efforts to adapt to the impacts of climate change. It is a programme run and executed in Africa by Africans and, to the extent possible, involving the whole of Africa.
WeAdapt and WikiAdapt are an interactive space where users and experts share knowledge and experience on climate adaptation. The wiki contains core themes on Framing Adaptation, Risk Monitoring, Decision Screening, and Communication, as well as tools and methods, worked examples and useful guidance to aid adaptation planning and implementation.
